Read&Write Training & Help

Instructions on this page deal with using the software version of Read&Write-the extension version follows similar steps.

Settings

The settings menu allows you to customize Read&Write for you. To open settings, click on the far right icon (Windows = three lines, Mac = Gear). From here you can show or hide features on the toolbar; change the reading voice, speed, colors; change highlight collection; and more.

Reading

There are a few different reading tools available in Read&Write. With Read&Write, you can read the web or files on your computer. If you are unable to read using the standard reading tools, the screenshot reader (dotted box and mouse icon) can be used to draw a box over any text to recognize and read it.

The default is for Read&Write to continuously read until told to stop or it reaches the end of the text. You can stop it reading by clicking "Pause" or "Stop" on the toolbar.

Word Documents

  1. Open the document in Microsoft Word.
  2. Click where you would like to start.
  3. Click on the "Play" button. Read&Write will begin reading at the beginning of the sentence.

EPUB

  1. From Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge, go to epub.texthelp.com.
  2. Click "Install".
    • This may add a shortcut to your desktop. If it does not, in Chrome, click on the Apps button on the bookmark bar. Then right click on the Texthelp ePub Reader, and select "Create shortcuts..."
  3. Open the Texthelp ePub Reader.
  4. Click on the "Choose File" button on the upper right.
  5. Locate and select your .epub file. Then click "Open"
  6. Select the text where you wish to start and click "Play"

NOTE: Reading EPUBs works best if you have the browser extension installed as well.

Studying

The highlighters and their companions are helpful study tools. To use the highlighters, select the text you wish to highlight, then click on the color of highlighter on the toolbar.

The benefit of using the Read&Write highlighters is that you can also use the "Collect Highlights" or "Vocabulary List" tools in conjunction with them.

Collect Highlights will extract highlights from the original document and create a new Microsoft Word document with only the highlights. This can be helpful for creating your own study guide or pulling out quotes for a paper.

Vocabulary List will extract single-word highlights and create a new Microsoft Word document with a table of these words, their definitions, a picture/icon/symbol, and a place for personal notes.
