Graduate Degrees

The School of Education at Xavier University offers the following graduate degrees:

  3. ELEMENTARY EDUCATION (MED)
  4. HISTORY OR ENGLISH EDUCATION (MA)
  5. MONTESSORI EDUCATION (MED)
  6. MULTICULTURAL LITERATURE (MED)
  7. SPECIAL EDUCATION (MED/MS)
  8. READING SPECIALIST (MED)
  9. TEACHING ENGLISH TO SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES (MED IN TESOL)

 All master's degrees for teachers require 30-credit hours of graduate study that may be pursued along with appropriate licensure or credentials. All programs are approved by the Ohio Department of Education and are nationally accredited by Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP)

Adolescence to Young Adult (Secondary Education MEd)

The Master of Education degree in Secondary Education is based on a foundation of liberal arts education that enhances the knowledge base for currently licensed teachers and other education stakeholders. The degree can also be completed in conjunction with an initial teacher licensure program. The Master of Arts in English Education and the Master of Arts in History Education is also a degree option for interested candidates. Educational Administration (MEd) 

The Master of Education in Educational Administration awards an advanced degree or licensure to licensed teachers who want to pursue administrative roles in education such as principal, administrative specialist or superintendent.

Elementary Education (MEd) 

The Master of Education in Elementary Education prepares students to teach children in grades PreK-3 and 4-9. Students may also pursue a teaching license for Early Childhood or Middle Childhood Education.

History or English Education (MA) 

The Master of Arts in History or English Education helps educators do even more by providing a strengthened foundation in the teaching profession alongside the opportunity to help young people finish high school fully prepared for college.

Montessori Education (MEd) 

The Montessori Teacher Education program awards a Master of Education along with an American Montessori Credential and Ohio Pre-Kindergarten or Kindergarten to Grade 3 licensure. Students gain a strong foundation in child development based on the educational philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori.

Multicultural Literature (MEd) 

The Master of Education in Multicultural Literature for Children is designed to meet the needs of certified teaching professionals who want to enhance their knowledge of appropriate literature for children in the classroom.

Special Education (MEd/MS) 

The Master of Education degree in Special Education is based on a foundation of liberal arts education that enhances the knowledge base for currently licensed teachers and other education stakeholders. The degree can also be completed in conjunction with an initial teacher licensure program.  The Master of Science (MS) in Special Education is also a degree option for interested candidates.

Reading Specialist (MEd) 

The Master of Education in Reading enhances understanding of the reading process with current theory and research as well as classroom application. Students learn how to work with students who need advanced training in reading skills.

Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MEd in TESOL)

The Master of Education in TESOL combines the required courses for an Ohio TESOL endorsement with the foundational courses for a master's degree from Xavier.
