What Happened? Swastika Found on Res Hall Bulletin Board [Closed pending new information]

A Resident Assistant reported vandalism to a residence hall bulletin board that included an image of a swastika on the morning of April 26, 2017 in Brockman Hall.

How Has the Bias Advisory and Response Team Responded?

The Dean of Student's office investigated the report however the.identity of the person(s) who vandalized the board remains unknown. Any individual who may have additional information about this matter is encouraged to contact the Dean of Students office.

What Happened? Student Called a"Dyke" [Closed and resolved]

It was reported on April 12 that a student, who identifies as non-gender conforming, was involved in a bias incident while walking to their residential hall back in mid-November. A fellow student who was identified as a woman with a ponytail passed by in a car and yelled out, "You fucking dyke."

BART provided initial support to the student involved.

What Happened? Lesbian Couple Experiences Stares and Pointing [Closed and resolved]

A lesbian student couple experienced stares and pointing by parents of prospective students multiple times while on an Admissions tour this spring semester (2017). These incidents have largely taken place inside of residential halls, Hoff dining hall and out on the lawn. There was one incident where an assumed to be woman faculty or staff member followed one student in this couple out of Cintas mumbling a sense of disapproval under her breath.

BART spoke with the Admissions Office to see if they have additional insight and will collaboratively develop ways to increase the education of prospective parents during tours.

What Happened? Library/CLC Racial Microaggression [Closed and resolved]

On April 6, a Black student directly reported to the Director of the Center for Diversity and Inclusion experiencing a racial microaggression in the library. The student suggested that a staff member made a comment that he "shouldn't steal paper" after the student asked a student worker, and then this staff member to use some paper to print pages from a book for a class.

How Has the Bias Advisory and Response Team Responded?

BART has provided support to the individual student involved. BART also spoke with the staff member in question, and can confirm that there was an accusation of removing paper from the printer but that comment was not racially motivated. The library reported that there has been a few cases of students wanting to take paper from the printer and the staff member who made the comment did so based on this past experience with students of various racial backgrounds with the goal of being preemptive. The library will be reviewing their approach to policies, how to improve communication about their services, as well as determine ways they can increase their efforts in diversity and inclusion on campus.

What Happened? Political Fliers in Alter Hall [Closed and resolved]

On April 5, the co-chairs of BART were emailed a report by a student concerned about flyers posted in Alter Hall that read, "Trump can kiss my Muslim, Black, Latinx, Jewish, Native, queer, poor, leftist, beige, working class, Asian, feminist, trans, immigrant, socialist, anti-fascist, American ass."

How Has the Bias Advisory and Response Team Responded?

BART responded by checking in with the building manager in Alter and learned that there was no official approval of these flyers, and therefore they were taken down on April 6 around 2pm. BART will be working on a one-page document to help building managers discern bias-incident worthy fliers as well as work with key stakeholders to better educate students about flier posting guidelines.

What Happened? Taxi Driver Offended By Student [Closed]

XUPD reported to the Dean of Students that an intoxicated student was observed by XUPD officers yelling obscenities to at a cab driver who had transported the student back to campus. The statements made by the student included bias statements such as, "Go back to your own fucking country."

How Has the Bias Advisory and Response Team responded?

It was determined that this incident is an example of bias, and the student involved is in the student conduct process which is being led by the Dean of Students. The taxi driver didn't want to take any further action.
