What Happened – Report of Zoom bombing involving racist slurs [OPEN]

The Dean of Students office received a report of a possible “Zoom bombing” during a hybrid class meeting.  An unidentified individual directed a racial slur toward a member of the class present on the Zoom call.  The faculty member leading the class attempted to engage with the person or people responsible for the offensive language; the person or people responsible directed a profanity toward the faculty member, and once again uttered a racial slur.  Anyone who may have information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Dean of Students office.

How has the Bias Advisory Response Team responded?

BART was informed of the incident and determined that it meets the University’s definition of a bias incident.  The matter has been referred to the Dean of Students office and University Technology Services for investigation.  BART is also 1) contacting students in the class concerned to offer support and 2) issuing a campus-wide email, sent in cooperation with Technology Services, to make the Xavier community aware of this incident, and to outline the University’s plans for preventing incidents of this nature in the future. 

What Happened – Report of Graffiti

The Dean of Students received a report concerning graffiti written on a dorm resident's personal whiteboard. The graffiti included racist and sexist slurs.

How has the Bias Advisory Response Team responded?

BART was informed of the incident and determined that it meets the university's definition of a bias incident due to the nature of the language contained in the graffiti.

What Happened - Report of Transphobic Language at Student Activity

The Dean of Students office received a report concerning the use of transphobic language at an on-campus student activity.  The report alleges that student participants directed transphobic language toward a student employee working at the activity. 

How has the Bias Advisory Response Team responded?

BART was informed of the incident and determined that it meets the University’s definition of a bias incident due to the nature of the language alleged to be used by the student participants. This matter has been referred to the Dean of Students Office for further investigation and student conduct action. 

What Happened - Report of Racist Social Media Post 

The BART Co-Chairs received a report concerning photos posted on social media.  In the photos, a Xavier student poses next to another individual dressed in blackface as part of a Halloween costume.  The individual appearing in blackface is a not a Xavier student.

BART was informed of the incident and determined that it meets the University’s definition of a bias incident due to the racist imagery in the social media post. This matter has been referred to the Dean of Students Office for investigation and student conduct action.
