WHAT HAPPENED – REPORT OF RACIALLY DEROGATORY LANGUAGE
BART received a bias incident report on November 11, 2021 outlining the use of derogatory language on more than one occasion this semester. Student A reported that Student B used derogatory language throughout the semester and it was described as racist, homophobic, and sexist in nature. One submitted example was of Student B saying “stop being gay” to his friends. An additional example notes that the Student B speaks negatively of Black Student Association events and similar events of that nature. Student B also said that “women belong in a kitchen”. Students asked Student B to stop using these comments. Student A reported feeling uncomfortable.

HOW HAS THE BIAS ADVISORY RESPONSE TEAM RESPONDED?
BART was informed of the incident and determined that it meets the University’s definition of a bias incident due to the nature of the language in relationship to the reporting student and other students noted. The matter has been referred to the Dean of Students office for investigation and potential follow-up through the student conduct process.


WHAT HAPPENED – REPORT OF RACIALLY DEROGATORY LANGUAGE IN A CLASSROOM
BART received a bias incident report on November 17, 2021 outlining the use of derogatory language in class on more than on one occasion for the last three months with the most recent incident occurring on 11/17.  Student A reported that Student B used derogatory language throughout the semester and it was described as racist and made students of color feel unsafe in the classroom, at times resulting in one student crying after class on 11/17. Student A noted more than one student considered submitting an anonymous report.

HOW HAS THE BIAS ADVISORY RESPONSE TEAM RESPONDED?

The course faculty responded to the behavior. The matter has been referred to the Dean of Students office for investigation and potential follow-up through the student conduct process.


WHAT HAPPENED – REPORT OF RACIALLY DEROGATORY LANGUAGE IN A DORM ROOM
BART received a bias incident report on October 29, 2021 from outlining the use of racially derogatory language in a dorm room occupied by Student A and Student B. This incident was investigated further by the Dean of Students Office and more details were gained from Student A. Specifically, Student A reported they were talking before going to sleep, and Student B began telling a story to a friend in the room. While telling the story, Student B said the “N-word”. Student A told Student B that using that language was not okay. Student B’s response was “It’s okay, I don’t say it with the hard R.” Student A has since moved out of the dorm room.

BART was informed of the incident and determined that it meets the University’s definition of a bias incident due to the nature of the language in relationship to the reporting student. The matter has been referred to the Dean of Students office for investigation and potential follow-up through the student conduct process.

WHAT HAPPENED – REPORT OF CLASSROOM ALTERCATION

The BART co-chairs received a report from a student regarding a threatening incident that took place in a classroom setting.  The student reported that another student had engaged in verbal and physical behavior, threatening to the reporting student.  The incident occurred in the context of a conversation regarding race and slavery.  

HOW HAS THE BIAS ADVISORY RESPONSE TEAM RESPONDED?

BART was informed of the incident and determined that if proven it would meet the University’s definition of a bias incident due to the nature of the language in relationship to reporting student and the class discussion topic. The matter has been referred to the Dean of Students office for investigation and potential follow-up through the student conduct process.

 

WHAT HAPPENED – REPORT OF RACIALLY DEROGATORY LANGUAGE ON BLACKBOARD
The BART co-chairs received a report that on Friday, 10/8 between 9a-10am, a contractor who works for campus services found racially derogatory language on a blackboard in a Husman ground level classroom. The contractor reported the incident to Physical Plant and erased the board.   

HOW HAS THE BIAS ADVISORY RESPONSE TEAM RESPONDED?
BART was informed of the incident and determined that it meets the University’s definition of a bias incident due to the nature of the language. The matter has been referred to the Dean of Students office for investigation and potential follow-up through the student conduct process.



WHAT HAPPENED – REPORT OF ALL GENDER/ACCESSIBLE RESTROOM SIGNAGE REMOVED
The BART Co-Chairs received an additional report, based on a canvas of campus by XUPD, that there were additional All Gender Restroom signs removed/missing on campus – two (2) in the lobby of Justice Hall and one (1) on the third floor of Gallagher. This is in addition to the two (2) signs in Alter that were previously determined as an incident of bias in September 2021.

HOW HAS THE BIAS ADVISORY RESPONSE TEAM RESPONDED?
BART was informed of the incident and determined that it meets the University’s definition of a bias incident due to the nature of the signage and how it was removed. The Dean of Students Office investigated the matter and was not able to identify the person responsible for this vandalism.  Anyone who may possess additional information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact the Dean of Students office.



WHAT HAPPENED - REPORT OF RACIAL SLUR USED IN EXCHANGE BETWEEN STUDENTS
The BART Co-Chairs received a report that students were seperately playing basketball at the HUB with friends when one of the students used a racial slur toward the other student as they were walking off of the court.

BART was informed of the incident and determined that it meets the university's definition of a bias incident due to the nature of the language. The matter has been referred to the Dean of Students office for investigation and potential follow-up through the student conduct process.

 

WHAT HAPPENED – REPORT OF ALL GENDER/ACCESSIBLE RESTROOM SIGNAGE REMOVED
The BART Co-Chairs received a report that sometime between Monday 9/13/21 afternoon and Tuesday 9/14/21 morning, the signage for the All Gender/Accessible restrooms on the second and third floor of Alter Hall had been ripped off the walls.

BART was informed of the incident and determined that it meets the University’s definition of a bias incident due to the nature of the signage and how it was removed.
