Osteopathic Medicine, D.O. Academic Requirements

Academic requirements for the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) program are as follows:

  • All prerequisite course requirements should be completed prior to orientation with a minimum grade of C or a 2.0 on a 4.0 scale. A C- is not acceptable.
  • Online, AP Credit, Dual credits can be used to fulfill required coursework, but XUCOM recommends rigorous, upper-level prerequisites taken in person.
  • Prerequisite expiration: There is no expiration date on prerequisite coursework, but the recommended time from completion is 3 years.

Prerequisite Courses

  • Biology/Zoology with Lab- 8 Semester Credits
  • General/Inorganic Chemistry with Lab- 8 Semester credits
  • Organic Chemistry with Lab- 8 Semester credits
  • Physics with lab- 8 credits
  • Biochemistry- 3 credits
  • Algebra or Math higher level- 3 credits
  • English – 6 semester credits
  • Behavioral Sciences- 6 semester credits
  • Recommended courses: Molecular/Cell Biology, Genetics, Anatomy and Physiology, Immunology, Microbiology, Genetics, Introduction to Public Speaking/Communications

Technical Standards

  • The technical standards requirements are requisite abilities and skills in the following five (5) areas: Observation, Communication, Motor and Sensory, Intellectual, and Behavioral and Social Attributes.
  • An offer of acceptance may be rescinded should an accepted applicant NOT meet the Technical Standards Requirements for Admission to XUCOM, or be found to not be able to meet the Technical Standards Requirements following matriculation. The financial impact of a rescinded offer of acceptance, if any, is to be discussed with the Office of the Bursar.
