Ohio Principal or administrative specialist licensure requirements are:

  • Master's degree 
  • Licensure coursework
  • Ohio Assessment for Educators (OAE) Exam #015: Educational Leadership
  • Principals Only: Candidates have a minimum two years teaching experience under a resident educator or professional teaching license with the grade levels for which the principal licensure is sought (PK-6, 4-9, and/or 5-12).  
  • Administrative Specialists Only: Candidates have a minimum of two years teaching experience or work experience under a professional pupil services license. 

Ohio Superintendent License

Superintendent licensure candidates complete all coursework listed above and the following coursework:

 In order to be recommended for Ohio Superintendent licensure:

  • Candidates have three (3) years of successful experience under a principal or administrative specialist license.

Ohio School Treasurer License

Educational Requirements

  • Candidate has a baccalaureate degree in business, three semester hours in school law, and three semester hours in school finance, OR
  • Candidate has a baccalaureate degree in a non-business area, three semester hours in accounting, six additional semester hours in accounting, business, or finance-related coursework (such as economics, statistics, information systems, and operations management) - (9 credit hours)

Internship Requirements

The field experience component may be met through completion of a 300-hour internship in a school treasurer’s office, under the direct supervision of a licensed school treasurer.

The 300-hour internship should be an individualized, mutually developed series of experiences reflective of the results of an assessment of the educational needs of the intern as related to the role, functions and responsibilities of the treasurer.

The 300 hours of field experience should be well distributed over the following:

  • Overview of Treasurer and Business Office Responsibilities (10 hours)
    • Review of statutory duties
    • Relationship with board of education
    • Role and relationship with superintendent and other administrators
    • Relationship with other offices and officials
  • Financial Management (20 hours)
    • Basic banking depository requirements
    • Investments
    • Bonds and notes
  • Fund Accounting (50 hours)
    • Processing accounts payable and receivable
    • Receipts, Billing, and invoices
    • Purchase orders and encumbrances
    • Petty cash and change funds o Student activity funds/management
    • Internal accounting controls
  • Financial Reporting (50 hours)
    • Budget and appropriations
    • Financial forecasting and fiscal analysis
    • General purpose financial statements, cash reporting
    • GAAP
  • Purchasing and business functions (80 hours)
    • Bidding and purchasing procedures
    • Employee contracts
    • Payroll processing/distribution/reports
    • Employee benefits (type, enrollment & claims)

EXAMINATION
