Excerpt
With Congress still in session, it was a busy week for advocacy!  We joined our fellow Jesuit and Catholic organizations for yesterday's Catholic Day of Action for Immigrant Children on Capital Hill, which drew news coverage from outlets including Crux and the Ignatian Solidarity Network.  Earlier in the morning, our executive assistant to the president, Shelby Lauter, and summer intern, Andrea Solis, both visited with Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) for Coffee with the Senator.  Senator Brown represents Xavier University, where Shelby graduated from in 2018 and where Andrea is rising senior.  Go Musketeers!

What I've Learned - XU Class of 2019

Senior CEF Benmun Damul
"I think a Jesuit education is instrumental to creating people who aren't just machines in the workforce, but who have empathy and who know how to care about people, who know how to ask questions and dismantle systems and institutions that may not necessarily be working for the world anymore."

Senior wins Big East Pitch

casey.jpg

Congratulations go out to Senior CEF Casey Smith, a Finance and Sustainable Economics and Management major, for his Big East winning, innovative approach to technologically tracking humanely raised meat.  Casey's research uncovered that 67 percent of people were likely to purchase meat that was "humanely raised," even at an added cost.  But before he won the Big East title, Casey had to win over the judges at Xavier.  Find how he did that - and won the Big East competition.

Xavier Junior CEF, Andrea Solis Canto, participates in prestigious Newman Civic Fellowship

andrea-solis-canto.jpg

Last spring, Xavier junior Andrea Solis Canto, a PPP (Philosophy, Politics, and the Public) major and Xavier Community Engaged Fellow, was selected as one of 268 students nationally to participate in the 2018 cohort of the Newman Civic Fellowship.  The Newman Fellowship recognizes and supports community-committed students who are change makers and public problem-solvers at Campus Compact member institutions. Nominated by their University’s president, Newman Fellows are provided with training and resources that nurture their assets and passions and help them develop strategies for social change to bring back to their campus and community.

Andrea earned this distinguished recognition thanks to her active involvement on and off campus addressing issues related to immigration.  Her engaged service includes participating on the boards of both the student-led Alternative Break’s immersion program, and Y.E.S. (Youth Educating Society), a leadership program designed for both documented and undocumented immigrants and their friends and allies.  Her weekly service commitment also includes founding and co-coordinating (with fellow junior CEF Hannah Frey) an Imagination chapter at the Academy of World Languages in Evanston. A unique K-6 magnet school where 60% of the students are immigrants or refugees from over 35 different countries.

As part of her yearlong Newman Fellowship, Andrea was recently invited to the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the US Senate in Boston, MA to take part in a national conference for all Newman Fellows. The Conference jointly addressed increasing civic learning outcomes and strategies for community and political action, and provided Fellows the opportunity for national networking.

Andrea notes, “It was inspiring to meet with so many people that are doing amazing work in their own communities that are all committed to making this world a better place.”

Xavier University:  All for one, one for all

Enquirer Media College Guide 2018
Cincinnati.com

We like to say that you’ll only know the Xavier Experience when you live it. It’s about the challenges, the triumphs and the insights that help mold you into the person you will become. It’s about never going it alone, and it’s about expecting success. It’s about being yourself - but becoming a part of something so much bigger. It’s the Xavier Experience. And there’s nothing like it.

Kendall King: Class of 2020
Major: Psychology
Hometown: Toledo, OH

kendall-king.jpg

“I grew up hearing about Xavier’s accomplishments, so I knew they must have been doing something right,” he says. “It’s not just a school, it’s a community, and Xavier doesn't just focus on one’s academics, but the person as a whole. I love it here because of the little, kind gestures displayed on campus - holding the door for people, saying ‘bless you’ when someone sneezes, and greeting a classmate as they pass by. They’re all things that make life at Xavier great.”

How do we do it? It’s our approach that sets us apart - our focus on developing the whole person, on developing intelligent minds and compassionate spirits. We believe in the power of Magis - that more is always possible, and that when we come together, we are unstoppable. It inspires us to do more in the tradition of learning, serving and teaching. We care about accomplishments, but also about each other, and we give our students the tools they need to live a life that truly matters. A Muskie never goes it alone. All for One.

By the Numbers:

  • Top 10 Midwest university for 23 years by U.S. News & World Report
  • A "Best Value" school by Kiplinger's Personal Finance
  • Overall success rate of 98 percent (employed, attending graduate school, working in service or volunteer positions within six months of graduation)
  • Ten programs ranked among the best in the country by U.S. News and World Report
  • More than 1,700 students engaged in service learning courses that benefit the Greater Cincinnati community each year

Steven was captivated by Music Resource Center volunteer and Community-Engaged Fellow Michael Murray playing our new banjo in the lobby. He couldn't resist picking it up so Michael gave him a quick lesson on the spot. Only a few minutes into the lesson, they were jamming.
