Carnegie Foundation Elective Classification for Community Engagement

Xavier has been awarded the Elective Classification for Community Engagement by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the American Council on Education. We are very proud of this achievement, as it affirms the meaningful work of faculty in all four colleges. We feel fortunate to be part of an institution that challenges us to practice service rooted in justice and love alongside our students, and to be able to teach our students the value of civic engagement. Few things are more fulfilling than seeing the content we discuss in class come alive as move outside the classroom and into the community, working with our neighbors to make change.
This application process included a rigorous self-study of curricular and co-curricular community-engagement practices. Assessors found Xavier has “excellent alignment among campus mission, culture, leadership, resources, and practices that support dynamic and noteworthy community engagement. It responded to the classification framework with both descriptions and examples of exemplary institutionalized practices of community engagement.”
Thank you to all faculty and staff who promote community-engaged learning and carry out community-engaged research and scholarship.
