About the Auditions and Interviews

Admission into the Xavier University Theatre program is competitive. Any student interested in being considered as a Xavier Theatre or Musical Theatre major must audition and/or interview with the Theatre faculty. This process includes either an audition or tech/design presentation and a personal interview.

You should start the process by submitting your Theatre Major Application. After the theatre application has been received, you will be contacted by someone in the program to set an audition/interview time on the date you select.


THE BELOW INFORMATION IS FROM LAST YEAR, AND FOR INFORMATION PURPOSES. INFORMATION FOR THE XAVIER THEATRE CLASS OF 2030 WILL BE UPDATED SOON!

AUDITION AND INTERVIEW DATES FOR FALL 2024 AND SPRING 2025

Sunday, November 17, 2024: In-person, individual auditions only.* 

Sunday, November 24, 2024: In-person, individual auditions only.*

Sunday, January 19, 2025: Online auditions only.**

Saturday, February 15, 2025: In-person, group auditions only.***

Saturday, March 1, 2025: In-person, group auditions only.***

*Individual auditions and interviews usually last approximately 30-45 minutes. Current students will be available to answer any questions and to show you around the theatre facilities. You will be contacted to schedule a specific time on either Nov 17 and 24, along with January 19, if you choose these dates.

**In order to best facilitate a successful online audition, please submit, via youtube link, videos of your audition materials by January 12, 2025.

***Group auditions on Feb 15 and March 1 will take place between 1pm - 6pm. Each applicant will receive an individual audition, along with a group dance audition (MT only). Multiple panels will take place, including alumni, current students, faculty and other departments across campus.

B.A. Theatre

Performance

Prepare and bring the following to your audition:

  • Two contemporary monologues (1-2 minutes each in length), OR
    One contemporary monologue and one contemporary musical theatre song (prepare the entire song). Please bring sheet music for the accompanist.
  • Submit your current headshot (8x10) and resume on the Theatre Major Application Form.

Technical Theatre or Design

Bring the following to the interview:

  • Portfolio of past production materials.
  • Submit your current headshot and resume on the Theatre Major Application Form. If you do not have a headshot, please submit a favorite picture of yourself in 8x10 format.

B.A. Musical Theatre

Prepare and bring the following:

  • Two contemporary musical theatre songs (prepare the entire song).
  • One contemporary monologue (1-2 minutes in length).
  • Submit your current headshot (8x10) and resume on the Theatre Major Application Form.
  • Prior to your audition date, please email a dance video via private YouTube link to skiless1@xavier.edu. Follow these guidelines:
    • Perform a one-minute dance in whatever discipline you are most comfortable. Suggested genres include contemporary, lyrical, jazz, hip-hop, ballet, African, or tap.
    • Use movements and steps that you can execute skillfully.
    • All choreography must be performed to music.
    • You should be the only person in the video. 
    • Please do not submit videos from performances.
    • Dancer’s entire body must be in frame the entire time.
