Joan Tunningley, PhD, OTR/L, BCP

Assistant Professor, Occupational Therapy Department

Dr. Tunningley’s experiences as an occupational therapist practitioner include early intervention, school-based therapist, community-based hospital, and skilled nursing facility. Her primary interests include interprofessional education, occupational engagement for individuals with Autism, family-centered practice, and care with dignity for persons with Dementia. She maintains Board Certification in Pediatrics through the American Occupational Therapy Association.  Dr. Tunningley received training and certification in the administration and interpretation of the Sensory Integration and Praxis Test, and is certified in Neurodevelopmental Treatment for pediatrics. She has been recognized for her service through an OOTA Service Award and a Commendation from AOTA for service on Board for Advanced Specialty and Certification. Dr. Tunningley currently serves on the AOTA Fellowship Program Review Committee.

Dr. Tunningley’s teaching includes the Domains and Process course sequence and research in the Master’s program; Pediatrics, School-based Practice, and other research courses are planned for the Doctorate program. The courses focus on implementation of specific interventions for enhancing clients’ occupational performances during daily routines, community engagement, and for social interactions. Courses include work with exceptional occupational therapists and professionals in our region and community engaged or service learning experiences as integral components of the courses.
