As a person living with cystic fibrosis, educator and former hospital chaplain Dr. James
Menkhaus invites us to explore ways to accompany others utilizing Ignatian spirituality. Drawing
upon his new book, The Roses Speak: A Chronic Illness Journey, Dr. Menkhaus shares stories
demonstrating the power of hope and how to be present to those suffering with chronic illness.

James Menkhaus, PhD

Dr. James Menkhaus teaches religion at St. Xavier High School. He holds a Ph.D. in theology from Duquesne
University and completed 5 credits of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE). He has published numerous peerreviewed articles on Ignatian spirituality and Catholic social teaching. His second book, The Roses Speak: A Chronic Illness Journey explores the reality of living and dying with a chronic disease through the eyes of the cystic fibrosis community. Encompassing 100 voices from ten countries, this book offers insights into the psychological, sociological, and spiritual aspects of illness. These interviews are supplemented by the author’s reflections on living with cystic fibrosis, as well as his experience as a hospital chaplain.
