E-waste Recycling

E-waste is approximately 2% of landfill material but 70% toxic contamination. Luckily, Xavier has a path to recycle technology assets. Information Technologies will receive or pickup old or unused University technology equipment to be reused or recycled. In 2024, the University has also partnered with Cohen Recycling to collect personal electronic waste to be recycled at an event at the end of the academic year, as well as recycling over 600 pounds of Christmas lights this holiday season. In 2024, 521 pounds of electronic waste was collected and recycled by the campus community.

Battery Recycling

Also a part of the Laudato Si' initiative, the Center for Mission and Identity has placed battery recycling canisters on campus for people to bring their used batteries. If you wish to bring some batteries, come to the help desks at the CLC and GSC to deposit them into said canisters and we will handle the actual recycling process and fees for you. If you are unsure whether or not the battery is dead yet, we also have testing slots in the canisters for AAA, AA, C, and D batteries.

If you have any questions or comments about used batteries, please reach out to Tim Sundrup, Associate Director of Mission and Identity and University Sustainability Coordinator, in the Center for Mission and Identity.

Holiday Light Recycling Initiative

Xavier University partners with Cohen Recycling to collect and recycle approximately Christmas lights that no longer work.  During the 2023-2024 holiday season the university recycled 350 pounds of Christmas lights.  Then in the 2024-2025 holiday season the university recycled 639 pounds of Christmas lights.
