History of the Fellowship

History of the Fellowship

In 1989, Xavier University faced an interesting predicament. As a Jesuit university, it claimed to foster a spirit of Christian service and produce men and women for others. But many were beginning to question the extent to which it was living these Jesuit ideals. In response to such concerns, Jan Jantzen, then Dean of Enrollment Services, proposed to the Financial Aid and Scholarship Committee the idea of creating a full tuition scholarship that rewarded excellence in service. And, thus, the Service Fellowship was born.

 James and Delrose Eigel

James and Delrose Eigel are long time supports of Xavier University. A 1956 graduate of Xavier, James Eigel began his professional career at Procter and Gamble before founding his own oil and gas production company. His belief in the value of education drives his support of local education programs and also of Xavier. He and Delrose, his wife of 48 years, established the James C. and Delrose M. Eigel Scholarship in 1997.

Their other gifts to the University helped establish the Community Building Collaborative - predecessor of the Eigel Center for Community-Engaged Learning.

25th Anniversary of the Fellowship
