Immigration and conversation

|

The self-described “most hated Hispanic in America” spoke about U.S. immigration policy to a student-packed Kennedy Auditorium on Monday. Then two Xavier students and a new member of our faculty responded critically to her ideas. What a privilege, I thought, to belong to a university community. Interesting people come to our campus—to reflect, describe, advocate, inform, and debate. We get to listen, to engage, to question, and often to disagree. I always learn, too.

This week’s event kicked off the new E/RS series, which couldn’t be more timely: Conversations Across the American Divide. Check out the upcoming conversations—on Hispanic immigration in Cincinnati, politics in small-town Ohio, and the people who hate the Night Vale scientist.

Think civil discourse is in short supply these days? Come see our students practice it. And get there early, if you want to get a good seat.
