Responsible Use
- AI is a Tool, NOT a Replacement
Generative AI tools can inspire, strengthen, and enhance career development-related materials and tasks. However, they lack the ability to replicate human authenticity or create meaningful relationships and connections essential for reaching your career and professional goals. Continue to utilize Career Development Office resources, including Career Coaches, in combination with leveraging Generative AI tools for researching, brainstorming, editing, and organizing.
- Strategic and Thoughtful Use
Relying too heavily on generative AI to on your overall career development, specifically on application materials, prevents you from showcasing your unique value and can hinder success. Instead, reflect on and articulate your experiences and draft your own content first, capturing your authentic voice and insights. Then, use AI strategically to optimize your self-generated materials with targeted prompts, ensuring your applications are personalized and impactful and career development is intentional.
- Ensuring Accuracy and Authenticity
Always verify and personalize AI outputs. Never simply copy and paste, as AI tools can generate inaccurate, biased, or generic content, including "hallucinations" or fabricated information. It's crucial to maintain your unique voice and critical skills, as over-relying on AI diminishes your own thinking and communication abilities and cannot authentically represent your experiences. Finally, be aware that employers increasingly use software to detect AI-generated content, and generic applications often get overlooked, so ensuring your materials are genuinely yours is key to standing out.
- Data Privacy
Be cautious when uploading materials to generative AI platforms. Avoid including any personal or confidential information, such as full names, addresses, email addresses, and phone numbers. Several generative AI platforms store user data and use that data to continue training the platform.
