Take Your Art Education Beyond Campus
Some works of art are impossible to fully understand from a slide or textbook. Xavier Art students have opportunities to study abroad, earn academic credit, experience new cultures, and encounter art and design in the places where they were created.

Art in Rome introduces students to the extraordinary art and architectural history of Italy, spanning the ancient world through modern times.
The experience extends beyond Rome with opportunities to visit cities such as Florence, Siena, and Assisi. Students encounter major works by artists including Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Titian, and Caravaggio at destinations such as the Vatican Museums, St. Peter's Basilica, Borghese Gallery, and Uffizi Gallery.
Students spend roughly five hours each day experiencing art firsthand, discussing its historical context, and responding through drawing or writing.
More than a survey of masterpieces, Art in Rome is an immersion in the experience of living with art. Architecture, sculpture, painting, language, food, history, and everyday life come together in a way that cannot be reproduced in a traditional classroom. Students leave with a deeper appreciation for the creative achievements of the past and a desire to continue seeking out the world's cultural and natural treasures.

Study Abroad for Art & Design Credit
Xavier students may also pursue approved study abroad experiences offered through partner and external programs. These programs are not led by Xavier Art faculty, but may be eligible for academic credit with appropriate approval.
Art & Design in Florence
Develop your art and design practice while immersed in Florence. Coursework combines studio experiences, exhibitions, contemporary artists, and direct encounters with one of the world's most important centers of art and design.
Design in Sicily
Use Sicily itself as a creative laboratory. Students explore image-making, collaborative design, architecture, visual culture, and the layers of Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Baroque history that shape the island.
Arts, Film & Culture in Budapest
Study art, photography, film, music, writing, and culture in Budapest through the Institute of Technology's Arts, Film & Culture program. Students combine hands-on creative work with exploration of Central and Eastern European art and culture while developing portfolio-ready projects.

Students should work with their academic advisor and Xavier's study abroad resources before enrolling in an external program to determine how courses may apply toward their degree requirements.
Past Study Abroad Experiences
Xavier students have a long history of learning through travel. Previous programs demonstrate the kinds of immersive academic and cultural experiences that study abroad can make possible.
Xavier in Spain Summer Program
Based in Comillas, a historic village on Spain's northern coast, this former Xavier summer program brought together courses in Spanish language and culture, theology, art, international business, and the university core.
The experience extended well beyond the classroom through excursions to Madrid, the Altamira Museum and its prehistoric cave paintings, Santillana del Mar, the Jesuit sites of Loyola and Javier, local cultural festivals, mountain landscapes, and portions of the Camino de Santiago.
