Lisa Helmstetter

Adjunct Faculty, Art Department

Lisa Helmstetter is a Graphic Designer and Fine Artist based in central Virginia, joining the Xavier staff through online Canvas classes. Lisa has held various roles in the art field from Production Artists at a large commercial printer, Art Director at a small agency, and Graphic Artist at a Fortune 500 company.

Lisa has explored several different art mediums from graphite and charcoal drawing, watercolor painting, soft and oil pastels, ink and calligraphy, to various forms of printing, environmental design, and corporate branding. A passion for paper has led to developing skills in hand-book binding. She also enjoys visiting Art museums whenever possible locally and through travel. These interests led to a study with a dual focus in Art History and Graphic Design, earning a Bachelor of Arts from Ohio University, and a Masters of Fine Arts from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU).

While completing her Master of Fine Arts at VCU, Lisa took several seminar classes with Philip Meggs, the author of the course textbook used in her History of Design class here at Xavier University.

Lisa has been teaching undergraduate classes for over 20 years, and developed a focus for online classes over the last 7 years. Research in online social presence and course development, led to completion of an Online Teaching Certification from the industry expert, Quality Matters. Online classes offer students an opportunity to engage through digital tools and develop skills in virtual teams which are becoming expected for many corporate entry level roles these days.

In her spare time, Lisa enjoys exploring other art mediums, outdoor photography, hiking, reading, growing orchids and gardening in her small rural home located in central Virginia.
