Clubs and Honor Societies

Student Social Work Organization

In February 2007, the Student Social Work Organization at Xavier was formed. Throughout the years, activities have included holding a Violence Awareness Panel and Clothesline Project, a Coats, Cash and Can Drive for the Freestore Foodbank, movie fundraisers for the club, presentations on homelessness, and participation in the Cincinnati Take Back the Night event.

SSWO made a trip to Chicago to visit the Hull House Museum twice over the years, most recently in spring of 2016. Jane Addams is celebrated there. As well, they visited Girls Forward, a social service agency founded by our alum, Ashley Marine. They also visited graduate school possibilities, including meeting our alum Dr. Amy Krings who is a faculty member at Loyola Chicago! This video is a collage of the memories SSWO collected on their trip to Jane Addams Hull House in Chicago.

Phi Alpha National Honor Society

In February 2011, Phi Alpha National Honor Society for social work programs granted a chapter, Rho Lambda, to Xavier University. The purpose of Phi Alpha is to provide a closer bond among students of social work, to recognize academic excellence, and to promote humanitarian goals and ideals. Social work majors are eligible to be inducted after completing 8 credit hours of required social work courses, achieving an overall GPA of 3.0, and achieving a 3.25 GPA in required social work courses. Rho Lambda, in conjunction with the Student Social Work Organization, hosts service opportunities, social events and other activities to enhance the experience of social work majors at Xavier.

Inaugural Pi Alpha (Rho Lambda) inductees in 2011 included Anna Wnek, Amanda Mock, Elizabeth Torrison, Rochelle Briscoe, Claire O'Connor, Ashley Marine, Jenna Hippensteel, Tara Immele, and Michele Verwiel.
