We are excited to announce our summer workshop series! These high quality workshops were guided by and designed for educators. If you are looking for some inspiration for you, your classroom, or your school be sure to join us for one or more of the sessions below.

Workshop Descriptions

All workshops will be 100% online and will start on the date listed. *Applicable to all undergraduate and graduate educators

Classroom Culture and Positive Behavior Intervention Systems I—EDWS 204/604
Presented by: Renee Mattson, Sat. 4/18 and Sat. 5/2

Workshop participants will learn about a number of practical strategies for teaching about behavior just as we would teach about other subjects such as reading, math, or science. The strategies will be formatted around a Multi-Tiered System of Support and within the PBIS Framework. Participants will also learn methods for school-wide PBIS teams and data collection. The workshop is applicable for educators and undergraduate students. (1 credit hour)

Classroom Culture and Positive Behavior Intervention Systems II—EDWS 454/645
Presented by: Renee Mattson, Fri. 6/5 and Sat. 6/13

Workshop participants will learn how to extend the strategies taught in the PBIS I workshop. There will be a heavy focus on Executive Function Skill Training and Trauma Informed Practices as a means to support positive behaviors. Students will walk away with practical strategies they will personalize for their setting and be able to use right away. This workshop is applicable for educators and undergraduate students. (1 credit hour)

Instructional Technology I—EDWS 201/601
Presented by: Jen Haller, Sat. 5/9 and Sat. 5/30

This workshop will give participants the opportunity to experience and play with current edtech tools being used in schools across the area. We will discuss strategies on how to incorporate technology effectively and efficiently, as well as how to select the right tools. Teachers in grades K-12 are welcome. Please bring a phone, laptop (Chromebook, Mac, Pc), or tablet. (1 credit hour)

Instructional Technology II--EDWS 455/655
Presented by: Jen Haller Fri. 6/12 and Sat. 6/20

This workshop will take a deeper dive into technology usage in the classroom. We will move beyond basic tools that were covered in Instructional Technology I and help you move towards becoming the techie teachers you’ve always wanted to be. Topics covered include: coding, robotics, AR/VR, and AI. Teachers in grades K-12 are welcome. Please bring a phone, laptop (Chromebook, Mac, PC), or tablet-or all of them. (1 credit hour)

Building Cultural Proficiency—EDXC 655
Course offered through Xavier University Center for Excellence in Education Mon. 5/18-Fri. 6/26

This course will focus on creating a culturally proficient school campus through the development of a school-wide plan including: promising practices of anti-bullying strategies, creating a safe culture within the school, developing educator and student mindsets, and lessons for students to promote and follow. Collaborate with other school administrators and staff to develop working documents that can be implemented throughout the school year. (3 credit hours)

STEAM in the K-8 Classroom—EDWS 453/653
Presented by: Lauren Angelone, Fri. 6/12 and Sat. 6/20

Workshop participants will learn a number of practical strategies for teaching STEAM in the K-8 classroom. The strategies will be formatted around an inquiry and project-based learning approach utilizing a variety of technology to support instruction in STEAM subjects. The workshop is applicable for educators and lab instructors in elementary and middle school classrooms. (1 credit hour)

Design Thinking—EDWS 451/651
Presented by: Tom Merrill, Sat. 5/30, 6/13, and 6/27

This class is designed to acquaint and equip students with the tools and techniques of design thinking, also referred to as human-centered design. Design thinking draws on methods from engineering and design, and combines them with ideas from the arts, tools from the social sciences, and insights from the business world. Participants will learn this process together, and then personalize it, internalize it, and apply it to their classrooms and schools. (3 credit hours)

Facilitating Learning Resilience--EDWS 452/652
Presented by: Mary Vicario. Fri. 6/19 and Sat. 6/27

Workshop participants will explore the neuroscience of trauma and toxic stress and the healing power of safe environment and relationships. Setting power struggles aside, we will explore how the brain heals itself and identify every day, brain-based interventions to help students of all ages and ability levels. (1 credit hour)
