October 19-23, 2020

Register to attend

Faculty Self-Care Week will introduce you to strategies and practices that can help balance competing demands on our time and energy. It is an opportunity to apply the Jesuit value of cura personalis to ourselves. Through a variety of sessions on topics such as mindfulness, work-life balance, and coping with stress, we will explore wellness practices as a way of honoring our whole, unique selves and lay the groundwork for ongoing habits of self-care. By taking care of ourselves mentally, physically, and spiritually, we are better equipped to care for our students.

All sessions will be via Zoom. For each session you attend, you will receive an entry for a prize drawing at the end of the week. You are welcome to attend as many sessions as you'd like. While drop-ins will be welcome, we encourage you to register for sessions in advance.

DETAILED SCHEDULE

MONDAY, October 19

9:00-9:30 am Desk Stretching, Tri-Health

This session will walk you through common muscle compensations that are present in those of us who sit and work at a desk for most of our day. We will go through easy stretches and movements that can be done from the comfort of your own office to help reverse these compensations, improve posture, prevent injury, and feel better! No equipment required; all levels welcome.

1:00-1:45 pm Write Here Write Now: Reflective Self-Care Through Mindful Journaling (Renea Frey, English)

In times of busyness and stress, the needs of the self can get lost in the chaos. This workshop will ask participants to connect with their needs for compassionate care through mindfulness, reflection and journaling. Participants should have their preferred journaling materials (computer, paper, journal, writing tools, etc.) available during the workshop.

2:00-2:45 pm Parenting - Learning Not Just to Survive, But to Thrive! (Tom Knestrict, Education)

Drawing on the research he has done with families raising children with special needs, Tom Knestrict will share some of the findings of his studies that translate into good practice for all families.

TUESDAY, October 20

1:00-1:45 pm Guided Meditation on Love and Compassion (Won Jae Hur,  Theology)

This session will offer a meditation exercise drawing on our innate capacity for love and compassion, for oneself and for all living beings. While drawing on the Buddhist tradition, the meditation practice is designed to accommodate all people, with or without religious affiliation.

2:00-2:45 pm Everyday Mindfulness for Better Mental Health (Michelle Hall, Counseling)

Take some time to explore how mindfulness can help you better handle stress and improve the quality of your daily life at work and at home. We’ll explore the basics of mindfulness, the many health benefits of continued practice, and resources to support your efforts.

WEDNESDAY, October 21—Enjoy Fall break!

9:00-10:00 am Gentle Yoga (Tri-Health)

This class will connect the mind and body seamlessly through a series of both standing and floor postures. Feel strong, invigorated, and refreshed while you lengthen and strengthen your entire body. All levels welcome. Please ensure you have space to move comfortably. Mat or towel suggested but not required.

THURSDAY, October 22
