In support of the Xavier Way, Fr. Graham SJ has asked the heads of certain centers and academic programs (Mission Animators*) to come together to create more integrated programming across the campus. To do so, the group has chosen the theme economic justice (broadly understood) for the 2017-2018 academic year. Economic Justice on the College Campus

To address the topic of economic justice in higher education, the CTE will host a keynote address and related stakeholder meetings with Sara Goldrick-Rab, Ph.D., national expert on college cost and student financial insecurity on Monday, February 12, 2018. The visit will spur conversations at Xavier on pedagogical and institutional choices that take into account financial impact on our students, who demonstrate hardship and even food insecurity, according to 2016 surveys.
Additionally, a discussion group on Goldrick-Rab's book, Paying the Price, begins January 24th from 2:00-3:00pm. Interested participants can contact cte@xavier.edu to sign up and request the book.
Wendy Hunt, CEO of FreeSet
-Wendy Hunt, CEO of FreeSet, a free-trade company, will be giving a presentation on Tuesday February 27th, 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. She will describe her work and the eight year journey of becoming a free-trade company. FreeSet employs women who are rescued from sex trafficking in India. It is a fascinating story.

There's a Bigger Game: Raising Awareness of our Role in Sustaining Systems of Poverty and Oppression

The purpose of There's A Bigger Game is to promote awareness of the impact of our buying choices on the free and fair trade markets and how those choices promote and combat systems of poverty respectively. This will be accomplished through University guest lectures and course integration that will surround a larger showcase event featuring fair trade t-shirts at a Xavier Men's Basketball game. Parallel events will be occurring at both Xavier and Marquette.
Wendy Hunt will be speaking on being the former CEO of FreeSet, a fair trade company, on February 27, 2018 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. in Kennedy Auditorium - CLC 412. More information on this event
Economic Justice through Home and Community Gardens in Evanston

Fresh is Better is a home and community garden project launched this spring by Bellarmine Chapel, in partnership with the NEXUS gardens at Xavier, the Evanston Recreation Center, and the Evanston Community Council. This project is designed to build relationships between the Xavier community and our neighbors through gardening, while simultaneously promoting food security, healthy eating, and economic justice for all.
