Championing Free Expression in a time of Censorship: Banned Books, the Legacy of Kurt Vonnegut, and what Freedom of Expression means to the Xavier Community
- 9:30 am – 4:00 pm in the CLC Atrium: Banned Book Celebration featuring readings, favorite quotes graffiti, and swag
- 4:30 pm in the 1st floor Library Garden Area: Lecture by Chris Lafave, Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library Curator with reception to follow
Professor Kristen Renzi is leading an all-day banned books event in the CLC atrium and Library Garden. Most of the event will consist of open reading slots, during which members of Xavier’s Community (faculty, students, and/or staff) will read from their favorite banned books. In concert with these open readings, the Humanities Reading Room will also highlight its own collection of books that have been banned and invite attendees to peruse them. The event will culminate with a visit from Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library curator Chris Lafave, who will give a talk and Q&A from 4:30-6pm on Vonnegut’s advocacy for freedom of expression, as well as his literary and social legacy. This is a library mini-grant funded event.

Join University Library to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the publication of Winnie-the-Pooh with birthday cake and honey lemonade! Special Collections will have two editions signed by A. A. Milne on display.

Join University Archives and the Makerspace for an open house to make your own Xavier pennant flag! Participants will create a one-of-a-kind pennant featuring their favorite past Xavier logos, colors, and phrases. Supplies and snacks provided!

25th Anniversary Celebration of Bob Dylan’s Concert at Xavier and Dylan in Cincinnati book launch for author and professor Graley Herren
6:00 - 7:30pm in the 1st floor Library Garden Area
For the past four years, Professor Graley Herren has been researching and analyzing Bob Dylan’s concerts performed in Cincinnati over the past six decades: 24 concerts so far, from 1965 to 2026. This September, his book Dylan in Cincinnati was published by the University Press of Mississippi as part of their American Made Music Series. One chapter is devoted entirely to Dylan’s concert at Cintas Center on November 4, 2001. The talk will focus primarily on Dylan’s only concert at our university and signed copies of the book will be available for purchase. This is a library mini-grant funded event.
