Jewish Studies

Jewish Studies Curriculum

  1. A multi-faceted understanding of Jewish civilization, history, culture, and religion (C)
  2. The experience of deep engagement with secular and religious Jewish texts and textuality (T)
  3. An understanding of historical and contemporary relations between Jews and Christians and the effects of this history on Jewish and Christians memory and identity (R)
  4. An experience of the Jewish world from multiple disciplinary perspectives

Students must complete a total of 15 credit hours in Jewish Studies coursework. Students must take at least one course serving each of the first three learning goals (designated by the abbreviations C, T, and R). To achieve learning goal number four, they are strongly encouraged to take courses from three or four different academic disciplines, although the minimum requirement is two. The curriculum is designed to offer students both breadth and flexibility so that the minor can be tailored to each person's unique academic program. Opportunities in the minor for community-engaged and experiential learning include a seminar in Israel in early January. Student are also eligible to take course in the Department of Judaic Studies at the University of Cincinnati, easily accessible on the Metro*Plus bus route.

Courses:

Careful academic planning can enable students to fulfill Core requirements as they earn a Jewish Studies minor. When a course in the minor also meets a Core requirement, such as a "Perspectives" course or an E/RS class, this is indicated below.
