Intentional Design Starts Here

Great courses don’t happen by accident. They are built around a clear sense of purpose — what students should be able to do by the end, and how every activity, assignment, and assessment works together to help them get there.

Course design and alignment is the practice of building that coherence intentionally. When outcomes, learning activities, and assessments are aligned, students experience a course that feels organized and fair. They understand what’s expected, how their work connects to larger goals, and what success looks like.

At Xavier, intentional design also means educating the whole person. Aligned courses aren’t just efficient, they create the conditions for deeper learning, genuine reflection.

The Backward Design Approach

Backward design is a course planning approach that starts with the end in mind. Rather than building a course around content coverage, it asks three questions in sequence:

What should students be able to do?
Define clear, measurable learning outcomes that describe the knowledge, skills, and ways of thinking students will develop. These become the foundation everything else is built on.

How will students demonstrate that learning?
Design assessments that give students meaningful opportunities to show what they know and can do, at the same cognitive level the outcomes require.
3
How will students get there?
Plan learning activities, readings, discussions, and practice opportunities that build toward the outcomes and prepare students for the assessments. Content is the vehicle, not the destination.

This sequence keeps the focus on student learning rather than content delivery, and makes it easier to identify gaps or misalignments before the course begins.

Well-designed outcomes create transparency, support alignment, and help ensure that activities and assessments work together toward meaningful learning goals.

Assessments
Assessments are opportunities for students to demonstrate learning, receive feedback, and continue growing. Effective assessments align with learning outcomes and provide meaningful evidence of student understanding. Assessments should help students apply knowledge, think critically, and make visible their progress over time.

Learning activities serve as the bridge between learning outcomes and assessments by allowing students to actively engage with ideas, practice skills, and make meaning of what they are learning.
