Senior Spotlight: Jared Montgomery

Senior Jared Montgomery understands that many things in the world operate through digital media, which led to his decision to major in Digital Media as a freshman.

The idea of attending Xavier wasn't on his radar until a college fair during his junior year of high school, which helped him discover Xavier’s mission to help students grow into well-rounded individuals in and out of the classroom. Jared knew then that Xavier was was the place for him.

Since that time, Jared has gained first-hand experience with this mission through building relationships with professors. “If you need recommendation letters or anything going forward, these teachers know your work and can really speak up on your behalf,” Jared says of the valuable connections he’s made with his professors.

Jared added an Advertising major after interning at a New York-based advertising agency, where he fell in love with the balance of creativity with business. He was pleased to learn how well the courses for the two majors integrated, which allowed him to complete both majors in four years.

An additional summer internship provided professional experience in both Advertising and Digital Media. The 12-week program provided him with the opportunities to sit in on industry briefings, learn how campaigns are planned and implemented, and understand the importance of collaboration among different roles in the field.

After graduation, Jared will attend Virginia Commonwealth University’s “Brand Center,” a program that will allow him to build a portfolio while earning his master’s degree. In the future he hopes to work as a creative strategist at an advertising agency, or for a brand like Nike or Apple.

His advice for those considering one or both of his majors is to, “Come into every space bringing all of yourself as much as possible.”
