Ready for registration for Spring 2017?!

|

Last year, we created this blog post to help get everyone set and ready for class registration.

Now, we are re-posting it as students and faculty prepare for Spring 2017 registration. Advising in the Comm Arts Department begins next week, and registration runs November 7-11, 2016.

Here are six tips for making registration easy and painless!

1. Plan your schedule ahead of time.

Don't wait until the last minute to figure out what classes you want/need to take. Especially during your Freshman and Sophomore years. Many of the classes you take are core classes that may fill up quickly. Use the DegreeWorks worksheet under Student Servicesandgt;Academic Records/Registrar Information. It lists every course requirement you need in order to stay on track. Be sure to make a back up plan with second and third choices for classes! [Pro-tip: Plan out your classes with this excel spreadsheet formatted to help you develop a 4-year plan]

2. Do your research.

Get the dish on possible classes and your professors. Poke around online for syllabi and other information (though of course, always take comments on ratemyprofessors.com with a grain of salt). You can also ask your friends who might have taken the class before.

3. Take fun classes!

Xavier has so many classes to offer beyond the core curriculum. Take a class connected to one of your interests or passions. Whether you're into music, politics, sports, or twitter-there's a class for you. Take something just to take it and see where it leads you.

4. Internship?

Get ahead of the game and consider applying for an internship for course credit! It is never too early to learn some valuable real-world work experience to add to your resume. If you play your cards right, you might find one of those rare paid internships! Looking for an internships? Check out Hire-A-Muskie and talk to the Communication Arts Internship coordinator, Dr. Rasmussen.

5. Schedule a meeting with your advisor.

If you do not know who your advisor is, it is usually listed on your DegreeWorks worksheet or listed under Student Servicesandgt;Academic Records/Registrar Informationandgt;View Student/Advisor Information. You are required to meet with your advisor so they can sign off on the classes you plan to take and take off the hold on your account before you can register. It is also a perfect time to get advice and check-in about how you are doing with your classes.

6. You did it! You are ready to register!

Double check your registration date and time via Student Services and you are all set! Pro tip: save the CRN (Class Registration Number) for all your classes in a document on your computer so you can copy and paste the numbers when you register!
