Making Vlogs

Last month on PBS Ideas Channel, Mike Rugnetta called vlogs one of the most important andquot;internet native forms--they are so strongly foundational to the internet experience that browsing would change remarkably in their absence.andquot; In a 2009 study of YouTube, internet studies scholars Jean Burgess and Joshua Green found that 40% of user-generated videos on YouTube were vlogs. Indeed, vlogs are an important part of digital culture. That's why students in COMM 221: Introduction to Digital Media taught by Dr. Ashley Hinck made vlogs as their end-of-the-semester projects. Students composed arguments about online communication that identified a problem, shortfall, or failing, and called for internet users to help them enact a solution--all designed for the vlog genre and YouTube context.
