Director of Undergraduate Research

 The College of Arts and Sciences is issuing a call for a Director of Undergraduate Research for a three-year once-renewable term beginning August 19, 2019. 

The Director of Undergraduate Research serves as a resource for students and faculty who are interested in establishing (student-faculty) research collaborations and, when appropriate, will coordinate activities of the University pertaining to research performed by undergraduates.

Following the strong leadership of previous directors, this position is an opportunity to participate in planning for more prominence of undergraduate research at Xavier.

Major Responsibilities

 The Director of Undergraduate Research

  1. Develops a vision and strategy for promoting participation in undergraduate research at Xavier University
  2. Oversees the assessment of the activities and programs undertaken at the College level to promote participation in undergraduate research
  3. Oversees program website, help develop other marketing materials such as brochures, etc., collect and disseminate program news and events, maintain alumni list
  4. Helps maintain records of all presentations given by Xavier students at professional or academic conferences; creates a yearly report that will be shared with appropriate offices throughout the University
  5. Oversees funding and organizing for undergraduate travel to conferences
  6. Promotes achievements of undergraduate scholarship at Xavier
  7. Develops and oversees process for funding summer undergraduate research at Xavier including encouraging applications for support and making recommendations on use of funds to support the activities
  8. Organizes cohort activities for summer on-campus research activities, minimally including an introductory meeting at the beginning of the summer and a Xavier Summer Research Symposium at the end of the summer during which students will present the results of their research
  9. Plans, in conjunction with the College of Arts and Sciences Dean's Office, the annual University Celebration of Student Research and Creative Activity
  10. Assists in fund-raising activities for undergraduate research

The Successful Applicant

Strong preference for tenured applicants in the College of Arts and Sciences with the following characteristics:

  • Has participated in research activities with undergraduates
  • Recognizes that scholarship appears in various forms across disciplines
  • Enthusiastic promoter of the value of undergraduate research
  • Is able to hypothesize new ways to promote and organize undergraduate research at Xavier

To avoid conflicts of interest, preference is for candidates who will not be serving as department chair during their term.

  • A one to two-page explanation of your experience with, and your plans and ideas around undergraduate research at Xavier, particularly ways to strengthen and institutionalize undergraduate research at the university through action in the College of Arts and Sciences and collaboration across the university, over the next three years.
