Barbara Hopkins’s Mentorship Receives Special Commendation by the American Chemical Society

Current chair of the Chemistry Department, Barbara Hopkins, recently received special commendation by the American Chemical Society (ACS) for her mentorship of Xavier’s own ACS student chapter for the 2017-2018 academic year. Xavier’s student organization was acknowledged at the Commendable Award level.

As context, over 400 chapter activity reports are submitted to The Society Committee on Education (SOCED) which is the governing arm of ACS and whose responsibility it is “to ensure American Chemical Society’s educational activities focus on critical chemical education issues across all levels of instruction.” SOCED conferred its 2017-2018 awards at the following levels:

69 Outstanding
92 Commendable
145 Honorable Mention

Peter Dorhout, ACH’s 2018 President, offered this endorsement of Xavier’s Chemistry department chair:

“Professor Barbara Hopkins, faculty advisor of the chapter, deserves special commendation. Few faculty members are willing to make the great commitment of time and energy that a successful chapter requires. Professor Hopkins’s efforts certainly represent the best in undergraduate science education and mentoring around the country. We extend our warmest congratulations to the students and Professor Hopkins for setting such a fine example for other chapters and being exemplary chemistry ambassadors!”

Xavier’s ACS student chapter will be honored at the 257th ACS National Meeting and Expo during the late March – early April time frame.

The College of Arts and Sciences congratulates Dr. Hopkins and her chemistry students in this outstanding recognition.
