CAS in Cincinnati's future

|

“How is Xavier—and CAS—contributing to a flourishing future for the city of Cincinnati?”It’s a question I’ve been hearing more and more frequently. Yesterday it came from a visiting Marshall Scholar, in town between the British academic terms to study how cities like ours are planning for the future. Last year I heard it in a downtown conference room, where civic and business leaders had gathered the region’s major universities to inform the city’s bid to attract a major corporate headquarters (and to be even more ready when future opportunities emerge).

Some find it surprising when my answers don’t end with the number of students completing our booming Computer ScienceBiology and other STEM programs. (Other people—like this P&G leader—already know what we know.) How would you answer that question? What are we doing well in and for Cincinnati? What should we work to strengthen and expand?
