Implicit attitudes, conscious beliefs

|

I don’t like to think that I’m biased. Yet this quick test suggests that I carry with me implicit attitudes that contradict my conscious beliefs. Think you might too? Try the test. Gender, skin tone, religion, body type—even accent: most of us have unconscious attitudes about them.

We’ve been talking a lot about diversity and inclusion at Xavier over the past two years. So how can we foster both? Lots of ways. Dozens of you have completed or will soon begin the Diversity & Inclusion Teaching Academy, or one of many relevant workshops. Yesterday Father Graham and 40 others in leadership roles across the university—including me and the CAS Assistant and Associate Deans—participated in another one of a series of day-long workshops sponsored by the Office of Institutional Diversity & Inclusion and HR. Among other topics, we learned from our own Gabe Gottlieb about implicit bias, racism and misogyny. Want to know more? Catch Gabe on the academic mall sometime, or check out this local exhibit.
