Flex Plan Module

What is a Flex Plan?

Flex plans are created for students who receive accommodations related to participation and attendance due to their disability status. Flex plans give students clear guidance on attendance parameters and expectations with consideration to their accommodations. Flex plans only apply to students with accommodations categories such as: modified attendance, ability to makeup work/reschedule exams due to disability related absence, assignment extensions or flexibility with due dates.

Flex Plans are completed "by course" once Flex Plan information is entered, the same information applies to all students in the course who have Flex Plan accommodations.

Verifying Disability Related Absences
A student’s diagnosis is considered private health information. In many cases students may not seek out medical care for each individual health crisis or flare-up. As faculty, you should not request medical documentation to verify student absences. Accessibility and Disability Resources can assist with verifying medically related class absences.

Items to Consider when Completing a Flex Plan

  • Consider consistency and fairness across all students - students can view all information that is entered in their Flex Plan.
  • Lecture based Courses - more flexibility
  • Interactive or experiential courses – less flexibility
  • Set clear limits and expectations
  • Does not apply to non-disability related absences
  • Not retroactive
  • Students must notify instructors promptly
  • No requirement to show medical documentation to instructors

Default Flex Plan
Based on best practices, there is now a default plan for limited attendance flexibility accommodations that should be implemented. If necessary, you should engage with ADR to determine what may be a reasonable alternative. If you do not complete the Disability Flexibility Plan (DFP), the default plan remains active.
