Urban and Regional Sustainability and Resilience

Immersions

Each year of the program, Master of Arts in Urban and Regional Sustainability and Resilience students will join with students in our Master of Arts in Public Affairs (MAPA) program to participate in a three-day public policy and sustainability immersion immediately preceding the start of the Fall semester.  In 2020, the immersion will take place Thursday, August 20 through Saturday, August 22.

The immersion gives students the opportunity to explore a different sustainability issue up close each year, applying the lessons they learn in their coursework to real=world problems while building connections with community partners, faculty and their fellow graduate students and alumni.

In preparation for the immersion, students will participate in a six-week online course each summer.  In Public and Environmental Affairs I, first-year students will explore the fundamental challenges faced by policymakers in the fields of public and environmental affairs, analyze the roles played by institutions and actors at various stages in the public policy process, and critically analyze decision-making and outcomes relevant to real-life policy questions and situations facing the sustainability field.   In Public and Environmental Affairs II, second-year students will build on the lessons learned from their first-year interdisciplinary coursework in history, economics, communication, statistics, and public affairs to explore the policy issue at a deeper level.
