XU/UC Masters in Engineering Partnership

Xavier University has partnered with the University of Cincinnati to offer students interested in specialized fields of Engineering clear tracks to pursue a 1-year Masters in Engineering or a 2-year, research-based Masters in Science at the University of Cincinnati in:

  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Materials Science Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Aerospace Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Architectural Engineering
  • Environmental Engineering
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Robotics and Intelligent Autonomous Systems
  • Artificial Intelligence

Specifically, Xavier University students who meet the field-specific criteria as outlined below, have maintained an overall grade point average of at least 3.3/4.0 in their major, who are admissible to UC according to current university policies, and who have the endorsement of their XU Department Chair will, on application, be admitted to the applicable Master's Degree Program at UC. Those students admitted will be offered financial support in the form of a partial tuition scholarship for the first semester of studies, renewable according to UC policies for the duration of studies for those students making satisfactory progress (as defined by UC according to its policies) toward the degree.

Students applying to UC will file the regular application forms including undergraduate transcripts, endorsement of the XU coordinator, letter of reference and a statement of purpose. For students participating in the cooperative program the GRE will be waived.

Mechanical Engineering – The Engineering Physics Track, Physics and Applied Physics track are admissible to the Master of Engineering. For students interested in the research based Master of Science, consultation on specific undergrad engineering courses depending on their area of interest (thermo-fluids, structural dynamics, system dynamics and controls, solid mechanics) with the UC Graduate Program Director is recommended.

Materials Science Engineering – students from Engineering Physics, Physics, Applied Physics and Applied Chemistry should take undergraduate thermodynamics and material science courses. They are then admissible to Master of Engineering or Master of Science.

Chemical Engineering – students from Applied Chemistry should take an undergraduate thermodynamics course or a physical chemistry course that includes thermodynamics and their engineering courses should include fluid mechanics and heat transfer, then they are admissible to Master of Engineering or Master of Science.

Electrical Engineering – students from Engineering Physics and Physics are admissible to Master of Engineering or Master of Science. Students in Applied Physics should take a Signals and Systems course then they are admissible to Master of Engineering or Master of Science.

Aerospace Engineering students from Engineering Physics, Physics, Applied Physics are admissible to the Master of Engineering. For students interested in the research based Master of Science, consultation on specific undergrad engineering courses depending on their area of interest with the UC Graduate Program Director is recommended.

Civil Engineering – students from Engineering Physics, Physics, Applied Physics are admissible to the Master of Engineering or Master of Science program, however consultation with the UC Graduate Program Director is required. Depending upon a student’s area of emphasis, certain undergraduate courses are required to have the background needed to be successful in the graduate program.

Architectural Engineering – students from Engineering Physics, Physics, Applied Physics are admissible to the Master of Engineering or Master of Science program, however consultation with the UC Graduate Program Director is required. Depending upon a student’s area of emphasis, certain undergraduate courses are required to have the background needed to be successful in the graduate program.

Environmental Engineering - students from Applied Physics and Engineering Physics should take undergraduate physics, chemistry, biology and engineering courses in consultation with the UC Graduate Program Director. Engineering courses should include Fluid Mechanics. They are then admissible to Master of Engineering or Master of Science.

Biomedical Engineering – students from Biophysics are admissible to the Master of Biomedical Engineering. Students interested should take the courses in consultation with the UC Graduate Program Director. Consultation on specific undergrad courses depending on their area of interest with the UC BME Chair is recommended.

Robotics and Intelligent Autonomous Systems – students from Physics, Engineering Physics and Applied Physics are admissible to the Master of Engineering program.

Artificial Intelligence - Students from Physics, Engineering Physics, and Applied Physics should consult with the UC Graduate Program Director on required undergraduate computer science competencies to be admissible.
