Occupational Therapy Masters (MOT)
Program Details
The Department of Occupational Therapy currently offers an entry-level Master of Occupational Therapy (MOT) degree. Because Xavier University is transitioning to an entry-level doctoral program, the last cohort of MOT students began in spring 2021 with graduation anticpated in December 2022. The transition to the OTD program, which has been granted Pre-Accreditation Status, began in fall 2020.Students in the Master of Occupational Therapy program become competent, caring occupational therapists who use occupation or meaningful activity to address physical, emotional or educational needs. Students graduate with an entry-level Master of Occupational Therapy degree, ready to make a difference in the lives of others.
Admission
Meeting the following criteria offered annually up to 40 students admission into the MOT program. If more than 40 qualified applicants applied to the MOT Program, applicants were ranked by their end-point undergraduate degree GPA. Students who dropped back a year were permitted into the graduate program if there were fewer than 40 qualified applicants from the original HOCS-entry cohort class. Qualified applicants not accepted into the program may have applied the following year.
All criteria were submitted to the Office of Graduate Services (513-745-3360; xugrad@xavier.edu). Applications were due June 1 following completion of the first year of HOCS courses.
- Graduate program admission form.
- Official transcripts of all previous college or university work.
- Evidence of completion or in progress of all semester hours for the BLA degree with a minimum final grade point average as reported on the official transcript of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale).
- Evidence of successful completion (grade of "C" or higher) or in progress of all prerequisite courses with no more than two "C"s (Anatomy and Physiology I and II, Rhetoric, Statistics I and II, Physics, Developmental Psychology, Bioethics, Kinesiology, Neuroscience, and all HOCS courses). All prerequisites were taken at Xavier University.
- Official test scores on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE), with a minimum average of 33 percent when all three sections were combined (verbal reasoning, quantitative and analytical writing).
- Personal statement related to the 40 hours of volunteer experience.
- Personal interview, evaluation and completion of on-site writing sample may have been required.

MOCT 503 - Technology for Life Participation II - 2 Credit Hours
Examines the influence of environmental and contextual factors on occupational performance, describes impact of legislation and public policy on architectural, physical and attitudinal barriers to participation, and reviews service delivery models in occupational therapy including assessment and modification of the environment and application of accommodations to enhance work, home and community participation.
MOCT 605 – Adaptation and Technology for Occupational Participation I - 2 Credit Hours
Introduces assistive technology practice in occupational therapy and provides overview of technology and adaptations to facilitate occupational performance for birth to young adult population related to productivity, restoration, and relaxation.
MOCT 611 - Professional Issues II - 3 Credit Hours - Administrative, managerial, leadership, and supervisory realms of OT practice reviewed including relevant ethical ramifications. Includes program planning and evaluation; supervisory roles and responsibilities; marketing and advocacy strategies; reimbursement and documentation; and policy of various service delivery models and the resultant influence on community and on occupational therapy practice.

Fieldwork Education
Fieldwork education is a valuable component of the program, providing opportunities to connect knowledge learned in the classroom to the various practice arenas of occupational therapy. Cincinnati is the perfect classroom offering various locations from hospitals to outpatient clinics, day care and mental health facilities. Level I and Level II fieldwork begins in the fifth year of the MOT program.
New Hub Facilities
Xavier’s new Health United Building, which opened in fall 2019, offers a variety of modern classroom environments that provide a well-rounded learning experience. The clinical and daily living OT labs allow for patient assessment, and the high-tech, state-of-the-art computer lab features technology for research and intervention.
International Experience
For the past 12 years, MOT students had the option to complete their service learning in Guatemala. Now, the OTD students will have a similar immersion experience for a Level I fieldwork placement. This unforgettable experience will build skills to last a lifetime.
