Non-profit Management Minor

The 15-credit hour Non-profit Management Minor is designed to ignite students’ passion for mission-driven service and prepares them to work in a wide variety of non-profit organizations, guided by Xavier’s Jesuit values of Magis, Solidarity and Kinship, and Service Rooted in Justice and Love.

At the end of this program, students will know and be able to:

  • Describe the history, guiding values, ethics, and impact of mission-driven service.
  • Explain fundamental theories, legal principles and best practices in non-profit management.
  • Apply foundational knowledge and skills for fundraising and development planning in mission-driven organizations.
  • Develop, write and submit compelling grant proposals.
  • Explain best practices for non-profit finance and compliance.

Required Courses

  • Mission-Driven Service (3 cr) - NPMA 100: This course introduces students to the history, guiding values, ethics, and impact of mission-driven service, reflecting on local case studies and service learning in volunteerism and humanitarianism.
  • Intro to Non-profit Management (3 cr) NPMA 200: – This course introduces students to fundamental theories, legal principles and best practices in non-profit management, including board governance, non-profit finance and budgeting, mission-driven decision-making, and annual reporting. Carries a Solidarity & Kinship (S&K) Flag.
  • Funding the Mission (3 cr) – NPMA 300: This course helps students develop foundational knowledge and skills for fundraising and development planning in mission-driven organizations.
  • Intro to Grant Applications (3 cr) – NPMA 310: In this course, students learn to develop, write and submit compelling grant proposals, including persuasive narratives, project budgets and supporting materials.
  • Non-profit Finance and Compliance (3 cr) – NPMA 320: This course prepares students to assume fiscal leadership roles within nonprofit organizations by developing a strong foundation in financial management, accountability, and regulatory compliance. Students will examine key concepts including budgeting, financial statements, audit readiness, and internal controls, while exploring the strategic role of financial leadership in advancing mission driven service.
