Minors

The Department of Mathematics offers minors in MathematicsStatistics, and Applied Mathematics.

Minor in Mathematics

The Mathematics minor requires 21 credit hours of mathematics courses:

  • (3) MATH 180 Differential Calculus
  • (3) MATH 181 Integral Calculus
  • (3) MATH 182 Sequences and Series
  • (3) MATH 225 Foundations of Higher Mathematics
  • (9) At least three additional Mathematics elective courses
         selected from MATH 220, or those numbered above MATH 225.
Notes
  • Students should select their additional mathematics electives under the guidance of a faculty advisor in the Department of Mathematics.
  • Students must maintain a 2.000 cumulative grade point average in these courses.
  • The minor in Mathematics is open to all undergraduates except those majoring in Mathematics or Actuarial Science. 
  • Students may receive no more than one of these three minors: Mathematics, Statistics, Applied Mathematics.
     

Minor in Statistics

The Statistics minor requires 21 credit hours of courses:

  • (3) MATH 180 Differential Calculus
  • (3) MATH 181 Integral Calculus
  • (3) MATH 182 Sequences and Series
  • (3) MATH 256 Introduction to Probability and Statistics
  • (3) MATH 311 Probability Theory
  • (3) MATH 312 Statistical Inference
  • (3) At least one additional elective selected from these:
    • MATH 257 Data Modeling
    • MACS 201 Actuarial Mathematics
    • ECON 350 Business Cycles and Forecasting
    • ECON 410 Empirical Analysis in Economics
    • INFO 329 Data Mining
    • An additional course approved by the department and
      selected under the guidance of a faculty advisor.
Notes
  • Students must maintain a 2.000 cumulative grade point average in these courses.
  • The Statistics Minor is available to all undergraduates except those majoring in Actuarial Science or Data Science.  For students majoring in Mathematics, at most two of the Statistics Minor mathematics courses numbered 220 or higher may count towards the requirements of the B.S. in Mathematics degree.
  • Students may receive no more than one of these three minors: Mathematics, Statistics, Applied Mathematics.
     

Minor in Applied Mathematics

The Applied Mathematics minor requires 21 credit hours of courses:

  • (3) CSCI 170 Computer Science I
  • (3) MATH 180 Differential Calculus
  • (3) MATH 181 Integral Calculus
  • (3) MATH 182 Sequences and Series
  • (9) At least three additional electives selected from these:
    • MATH 220 Multivariable Calculus
    • MATH 222 Applied Linear Algebra
    • MATH 230 Introduction to Ordinary Differential Equations
    • MATH 256 Introduction to Probability and Statistics
    • MATH 257 Data Modeling
    • MATH 280* Combinatorics
    • MATH 321 Numerical Analysis
    • MATH 325 Mathematical Modeling
    • MATH 372 Applied Analysis
    • CSCI 226* Mathematical Foundations for Computer Science

*Credit cannot be earned for both MATH 280 and CSCI 226
