Academic Support and Summer Course Enrollment
Academic Support
Participants in the First Steps Summer Bridge Program engage in required activities that support their academic success and integration into the Xavier University community. Each student is paired with a Peer Mentor—an upper-class student who helps them navigate college life, develop key academic and personal skills, and continues to offer guidance throughout the academic year. Students are also expected to attend professor office hours, make use of study sessions during summer residency, and attend Academic Readiness Sessions led by faculty and staff.
Workshops & Events
Participants will take part in campus resource workshops and events designed to build confidence, foster connections, and prepare for college success, including:
- Time Management and Effective Reading Strategies
- Building Relationships with Faculty & Using Office Hours
- Academic Advising and Learning Support
- Introduction to Library Resources
- Career Exploration Activities
- Opening and Closing Ceremonies with Xavier faculty, staff, alumni
- Participation in Manresa Orientation, supported by Peer Mentors and Manresa Leaders
Summer Course Enrollment
First Steps Summer Bridge participants will earn 3 academic credits by completing COMM 206: Writing for the Media during the 6-week Summer Session (June 30–August 8, 2025). The course counts toward GPA and degree requirements, and academic advisors will be informed to support appropriate Fall 2025 registration.
Participants agree to:
- Stay enrolled in the Summer 2025 course
- Follow all course and instructor policies, including attendance
- Complete all assignments and maintain a minimum grade of C- and a 2.0 GPA
Failure to meet academic requirements may result in academic consequences. Students must promptly inform the program director of any issues that may impact program completion or Fall 2025 enrollment.
