Mullins named McDonald Award recipient

Congratulations to Dr. Richard Mullins, Professor of Chemistry, who was recently awarded the 2025 Joan G. McDonald Award for Outstanding Teaching in the Sciences. Dr. Mullins receives this award for the second time, having received it in 2010.

Dr. Mullins has been involved in multiple projects that positively impact Xavier. Apart from playing a key role in launching the recent collaborative pharmaceutical chemistry program with the University of Cincinnati, Dr. Mullins has led the STEM London study abroad program and has served as the MCAT prep course coordinator for many years. Our Xavier students, especially in the chemistry, biology, and physics departments, have and will continue to benefit from these programs for many years to come.

In addition to his organic chemistry textbook entitled Organic Chemistry: A Learner-Centered Approach that won the 2022 Most Promising New Textbook Award from the Textbook and Academic Authors Association, Dr. Mullins has also published research work in international chemistry journals as well as regularly presented scholarly work at the national chemistry conference with Xavier students.

Perhaps Dr. Mullins’ greatest strength lies in his mentorship. He is deeply committed to his students, investing time both in and out of the classroom to support their learning. Each year, he mentors students interested in pursuing advanced studies in organic chemistry, encouraging them to engage in meaningful research and gain experience at research-intensive institutions. Many of his mentees have gone on to excel in graduate programs.

Dr. Mullins also has served as faculty advisor for several student organizations at Xavier, including Distance 4 Dreams, a group that supports students in developing leadership skills and devoting their time and effort for others who are less fortunate. Dr. Mullins genuinely loves to spend time with his students and has deeply invested in their growth.

Dr. Mullins’ exceptional teaching, scholarship, and service have made a lasting impact on Xavier and its students, guiding them toward successful and meaningful futures.
