Student Research

  • All Xavier Biology Department students can complete a research project if they choose to and most do, and some students begin working in research labs as early as their freshman year. Many present at conferences and some even co-author publications.
  • Xavier faculty in Biology are supported by multiple generous private endowments for student research as well as public grants from organizations like NASA and USDA. Some students work in these labs; others at Cincinnati Children's Hospital, the Cincinnati Zoo, or some of the many biotech and pharmaceutical companies nearby.
  • Thanks to the support of generous donors, Xavier students have the opportunity to use state-of-the-art equipment in their research, working not with grad students but directly with faculty. The proposed College of Osteopathic Medicine, opening in Fall, 2027, will provide further opportunities.

“The people in the Biology Department foster an enjoyable atmosphere for learning and great times. Undergraduate research has been an invaluable experience that has allowed me to discover which fields of biology that I am truly interested in, and which directions I want to head in the future.” - Clayton Traylor, Environmental Sciences 2019
