Requesting a Registration Override

In rare cases, a student may have special circumstances that require them to take a specific course or attend class at a particular time. When this happens, a registration override may be requested. An approved override allows a student to register for a class that is otherwise closed or restricted. Please note: Registration overrides are never guaranteed, but the college will make every effort to accommodate students when circumstances warrant it.

Overrides are NOT granted for reasons such as:

  • Preferring a different class time
  • Preferring a specific instructor

For situations like these, students should follow the normal waitlist process. Overrides are generally reserved for cases where an unexpected situation disrupts a student’s schedule and prevents normal registration.

How to Request a Registration Override

  1. Gather course information: Identify the professor, subject, course number, section, and CRN for the class you wish to add. You can find this information in Banner Self-Service.
  2. Identify the department chair: Locate the chair for the department offering the course.

Example: For ENGL 101, contact the English Department Chair.(See: List of Department Chairs)

  1. Write an email explaining your situation: Clearly describe why you are requesting an override and include all course details (subject, number, section, CRN).
  2. Send the email to the correct recipients. Be sure to send your request to
    • The department chair
    • The professor
    • Your academic advisor(s)

 What Happens Next?

The department chair and professor will review your request and determine whether it is reasonable and whether space can be made in the course. Faculty members may indicate to you that they are willing to let you in the course, however, only the department chair can approve an official override.
