Master of Education in Reading

It's true that the more you read, the more you learn. The Master of Education in Reading enhances the unique opportunity teachers and reading specialists have to influence our youth to become lifelong readers–and in turn–lifelong learners.

This Program


30 credit hours are required for the master's degree consisting of 9 hours in core courses plus 21 hours of concentration course electives.


Choose courses in reading, language arts and children's literature.


Licensed teachers who want to add the Ohio Reading Endorsement may pursue it separately or at the same time as the MEd.

Reading Program Design

  • The Master of Education in Reading is designed for teachers and other reading professionals who want to enhance their knowledge of the reading process with current theory and research.
  • Reading teachers learn how to help students of all ages become effective, strategic readers who read and write enthusiastically and purposefully.
  • Some of the courses that can be chosen as electives include Advanced Children's Literature, Storytelling as a Cultural Craft, Phonics and Orton Gillingham, and Teaching Reading to Children with Special Needs.

Core education courses are offered at five Cincinnati area locations, making it even easier for students to take courses. The locations include:

  • Covington Catholic High School in Northern Kentucky.
  • Middletown Fenwick High School north of Xavier.
  • Wilmington High School, northeast of Xavier.
  • Oak Hills Professional Development Center west of Xavier.
  • Glen Este High School east of Xavier.
