XU/LeCI Inside-Out Class - Spring 2014

The Xavier Department of Criminal Justice offers YOU the chance to spend time behind bars in two different state prisons or at a correctional honor camp –and earn 3 hours credit while you do it.

The Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program is unlike any class you have ever had. The course meets inside a men's prison or a men's correctional honor camp located approximately 25 miles north of Xavier University or at a women's prison for women 48 miles north of Xavier University. The class combines Xavier students with an equal number of incarcerated men at Lebanon Correctional Honor Camp in the Fall semester and Lebanon Correctional Institute in the Spring semester or women at Dayton Correctional Institute in the Fall semester. Both Xavier and incarcerated students have the same syllabus and academic requirements. For years, dozens of Xavier students-from all majors-have been transformed by the Inside-Out class.

The curriculum at Lebanon Honors Camp in the Fall focuses on the issues and challenges of reentry.  The curriculum at  Lebanon Correctional (level 3 state men's prison) in the Spring includes the exploration of why people commit crime, the purpose of prison, analysis of the criminal justice system, punishment and rehabilitation, the intersection of race, class, and sex in the criminal justice system, victims and victimization, and the myths and realities of prison life, while the curriculum at Dayton Correctional Institute (a women's prison) in the Fall includes pathways into crime, the importance of gender-specific rehabilitation, the role of children, victimization, the myths and realities of prison life, and dependency.

Inside-Out fulfills the diversity Core requirement and is an elective for criminal justice and other majors at Xavier. To be considered for the course, students are required to fill out an application and attend an interview with Dr. Cheryl Lero Jonson for the Lebanon Honors Camp and Lebanon Correctional courses or Dr. Gail Hurst for the Dayton Correctional course. Class size is very limited, so if you have questions or want to be considered for this exciting class, please contact:
