Clayton Scanlon

Clay was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. The oldest son of a dentist and a nurse, he attended
St. Louis University High School and developed an early appreciation for Jesuit education. After four years of Latin and a year of Greek in high school, Clay decided to pursue the HAB program at Xavier University along with pre-medical coursework.

While at Xavier, through a combination of the University's pre-professional development services, as well as a series of serendipitous personal events, Clay's post-graduate efforts became centered on a career in Ophthalmology. During his sophomore year, Clay was accepted into the University of Toledo College of Medicine's MEDstart early admissions program. He also attempted to nurture both an interest in medical and classical history by focusing on ancient theories of ocular anatomy and physiology for his senior HAB thesis.

After graduating from Xavier's Honor's Bachelor of Arts program with a minor in the Natural Sciences in 2004, Clay received his medical degree from the University of Toledo College of Medicine in 2008. He completed his medical internship at the St. Louis University-affiliated St. Mary's Health Center in St. Louis, Missouri. Dr. Scanlon then completed his Ophthalmology residency at the St. Louis University Eye Institute in 2012, serving as the chief resident during his third year. Clay then performed a 2 year vitreoretinal surgical and medical fellowship at the Vitreoretinal Foundation in Memphis, Tennessee. Dr. Scanlon returned home to join the Retina Associates of St. Louis in 2014. He works in private practice treating medical and surgical diseases of the retina and vitreous at various locations across metro St. Louis. Clay also teaches residents at the St. Louis University Eye Institute serving as volunteer faculty.

Clay was introduced to his wife, Emily, through mutual friends in 2010 during residency and they were married in 2011. Emily is an architect at Trivers Associates in downtown St. Louis. In 2015, they welcomed their first child, J. Kanen. Clay is an avid sports fan and blues harmonica musician. He and Emily both have an interest in urban revitalization and enjoy exploring St. Louis' many neighborhoods and restaurants.
