CTE May workshop on Alternative Grading
May 8, 9:00 – 11:50 am Zoom/Teams Link: https://xavier.zoom.us/j/5836928686?omn=93620403879
9:00-9:50 am: The role of grades in a modern classroom. (Eric Bucher)
The traditional letter grading scale dates back to 1883, first put forth by Augustana College and Seminary. This traditional form of grading was developed to approach a very different classroom than we typically see today... and raising the question, is it the best approach for our current students? In this introductory session we explore some of the motivations and drives to pursue alternative approaches to grades in the classroom. This will explore some of the basic theories around grading and why we may consider modernizing our grades for our ever-changing classrooms.
10:00 - 10:50 am: Creating alternative grading in YOUR classroom. (Eric Bucher)
This hands-on workshop will allow participants to explore ways that you can utilize alternative grading in your own classrooms to create a more equitable and collaborative environment. We will do a brief presentation on some of the approaches that others have tried, but spend most of the time workshopping ideas in small groups for how to bring innovative approaches to your own classrooms. This will include topics of un-grading, mastery-based grading, pass/fail grading, and standards based grading among others.
STUDENTS AS PARTNERS
Call for STEM faculty participation
Students as Partners is an innovative, internationally-recognized approach to pedagogy in higher education that re-positions students as collaborators in teaching and learning.
This semester-long partnership program will match interested STEM faculty with 1-2 undergraduate students. Faculty and student partners choose an aspect of a course to focus on together for a semester. Together, they focus on gathering ongoing student-centered feedback with the primary goal being to improve student success, with a particular emphasis on equity, inclusion, and belonging.
