Nurturing others has always come second nature to you. You also can’t really recall a time where you weren’t curious about the complex human body. Maybe you instinctively gravitate toward taking care of loved ones when they aren’t feeling well or perhaps you’re the one who is always concerned about the overall well-being of those around you.
These are usually signs that a major in Nursing is calling. As you’re choosing a path for college, explore exactly where these signs could be leading you as well as the kind of nurse you were meant to be.
What to consider as you're selecting the Nursing program
While researching the Nursing program is a great place to start, it may be helpful to keep these questions in mind to confirm you’re on the right track:
- Why are you interested in Nursing? Is there a specific reason you’re looking into this field? Sometimes outside influences such as family members, past school courses, and personal experiences can influence how we choose our career path.
- What specialty as a nurse do you want to pursue? The world of nursing, especially with a four-year degree, provides many different paths in medicine, allowing you to choose from a variety of specialties that you feel fit you best.
- What do you want out of your career and what do you value? Do you want to travel? Are you looking for an office environment or more hands-on work? Would you prefer working directly with people or behind the scenes? These are a few questions to ask yourself when you’re mapping out your career choices to make sure your path leads you toward a job that fits your values.
The College of Nursing
The goal of Xavier’s College of Nursing is to prepare students as professional nurses who are educated to meet the health care needs of diverse populations in an ever-changing and highly technical health care environment.
Graduates practice nursing throughout both the tri-state area and the greater United States. They are well-respected in the health care community as knowledgeable, professional, and ethical and are prepared to succeed in meeting current and future challenges in health care delivery.
Unique Programs at Xavier
The Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Xavier is a community-based, holistic program focused on a health and wellness model. It educates future nurses in the skills of communication, coordination, and cooperation with other health care professionals.
Following successful completion of the program, students are qualified to sit for the registered nurse licensure examination and are also qualified to sit for the holistic nurse certification examination.
The College of Nursing is proud of the innovative programs developed over the years that creatively address changes in the current health care industry.
- Direct Admission
- Xavier’s Nursing program is a direct admit program. Admitted Nursing students have security knowing they are a part of the program and will start nursing classes the fall of their first year.
- Simulation Labs
- Xavier's new, state-of-the-art clinical simulation laboratories supplement students' clinical experiences by providing futuristic simulated learning environments. Using human patient simulators, students have the opportunity to participate in simulated challenging and real-life scenarios.
- Mentoring Program
- All Nursing students participate in a sophisticated mentoring program within the nursing student organization and nursing alumni constituency of the Xavier Alumni Association.
Clinical rounds by semester
Xavier’s Nursing students start clinicals their second year, giving them three years of practical experience and opportunity to build a professional network.
- Sophomore Year
Semester 1: Medical-surgical clinical at a rehab facility or hospital
Semester 2: Medical-surgical clinical at a nearby hospital - Junior Year
Semester 1: 6 weeks of OB/labor and delivery at a nearby hospital, 6 weeks of pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital
Semester 2: Medical-surgical clinical at a nearby hospital - Senior Year
Semester 1: 6 weeks of mental health at a nearby hospital, 6 weeks of community health at a nearby hospital
Semester 2: Focus on the care of complex clients, while shadowing a professional nurse through their round
The Health United Building
The Health United Building (HUB) is Xavier’s new campus facility that celebrates health and wellness as an expression of Xavier’s mission and foundational value of care for the whole person. It is home to Xavier's Nursing classes and state-of-the-art simulation labs allow students to practice challenging scenarios they will face in the real world.
In addition to these classrooms and simulation labs, the building encompasses all health related elements of the Xavier student experience, including a recreational center, a comprehensive primary care clinic and a mental health center with counseling rooms, a pharmacy, and wellness coordinators.
Student Outcomes
A world of options opens for you as a professional nurse with a baccalaureate nursing degree. It's easy to find meaningful, challenging, and rewarding jobs in nursing. You can:
- Practice in any state across the U.S. and in many countries; in addition to hospitals, opportunities include practice in community health, school and occupational health programs, home care, rehabilitation services, hospice, and the armed forces. From hospital practice to government, from counseling to research, career opportunities are boundless.
- Enter a graduate program to become an advanced practice nurse educator and/or an advanced nurse leader. Examples of advanced practice nurses include nurse practitioner, nurse midwife, clinical specialist, or a nurse anesthetist; many advanced practice nurses engage in exciting health policy formation activities at the local, state, national and international level.
- Pursue doctoral study in nursing and contribute through rigorous research to the body of knowledge required to provide health care and practice in health care settings and/or teach nursing in institutions of higher education.

Xavier and the Queen City

It is home to four nationally ranked hospitals where Xavier Nursing students find practicum, internship, and employment opportunities.
While Cincinnati is bustling with professional opportunity, it’s also the center of a social scene like no other. The Queen City has multiple activities such as BLINK, ice skating in Fountain Square, Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens, major sports events, museums, Riverbend Music Center, and so many others.
