Stacy Smith received a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in clarinet performance in 2018 from the University of Oklahoma, where he studied clarinet with Dr. David Etheridge, Professor of Clarinet and clarinetist with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic and Jozsef Balogh, Visiting Professor of Clarinet and former principal clarinet of the Budapest (Radio) Symphony Orchestra and the Hungarian State Opera. He also studied clarinet pedagogy and literature with Dr. Etheridge; applied saxophone and woodwind pedagogy and literature with Dr. Gail Hall; clarinet mouthpiece refacing with Dr. Jerry Neil Smith; and woodwind professional development with Dr. Suzanne Tirk. Dr. Valerie Watts, Professor of Flute, served as his advisor and doctoral committee chair, and Dr. Jeffrey Swinkin, Associate Professor of Music Theory, served as his committee co-chair. Dr. Smith’s other notable clarinet instructors include Larry Combs, principal clarinet of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra; Dr. Jane Carl, Professor of Clarinet at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music; Dr. Shannon Scott, principal clarinet of the Tulsa Philharmonic; and Jon Weiner, principal clarinet of the Kansas City Symphony. Dr. Smith’s doctoral dissertation was a multi-faceted project, including analytical, musicological, and historical chapters related to the main topic: Joseph Leopold Eybler (1765-1846), a forgotten Viennese master composer and his clarinet concerto in B-Flat Major (1798). The dissertation includes an analysis of the three movements of the concerto, a historical accounting of the concerto, its disappearance and rediscovery, and a performing edition of the solo part developed from an authorized facsimile of the Autograph Manuscript and period woodwind performance-practice treatises and methods 1700-1820. Since joining the music faculty of Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio in 2022, Dr. Smith’s teaching duties have included applied clarinet, applied saxophone, and woodwind techniques. He previously served in other full- or part-time positions in Kentucky, Illinois, Texas, and Oklahoma. In addition to clarinet and woodwind performance, pedagogy, and literature, Dr. Smith is also qualified to teach undergraduate music theory and is experienced in teaching a wide array of historically-based music lecture courses. Additionally, he is active as a composer and writes art music in a variety of styles within the broader classical genre. Lastly, his scholarly endeavors include a number of active research projects, including a book project on his late clarinet professor, Dr. David Etheridge, and multiple articles on period woodwind performance-practice 1700-1820.
