Scot Buzza, PhD
Assistant Professor of Instruction
Dr. Scot Buzza has had an international performing career that includes solo appearances with orchestras in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, The Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland and Venezuela. He has held principal violist positions with orchestras in both Tokyo, Japan and Barcelona, Spain. As a chamber musician Buzza has performed worldwide, and his recitals have been broadcast on Radio France, PBS, Radio Amsterdam, Tokyo NHK and Radio Catalunya (Spain).
Buzza is a graduate of Yale University, where he held simultaneous fellowships in both the School of Music and the Department of Slavic Languages and Linguistics, and of the University of Kentucky, where he earned his PhD in musicology. Buzza has taught musicianship, music theory, music history, and musical theatre at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, Northern Kentucky University, and the University of Kentucky, and is currently a member of the department of music and theatre at Xavier University.
Buzza's professional research centers on 18th-century sacred music and 20th-century American musical theatre, and his publications range from reference works such as the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians and journals such as Eighteenth-Century Music to popular media such as Fanfare magazine. Buzza is currently artistic director of the Cincinnati Choral Society, as well as music director of the Our Lady of Divine Providence family of parishes. He is director of the KIIS Institute in Salzburg, Austria, where he has taught music history and conducting since 2009.
