Xavier’s online MSN-PMHNP program consists of 48 credit hours, including:
- 17 credit hours of MSN core courses, synthesis and application
- 29 credit hours / 600 clinical hour of PMHNP core
- 2 credit hours of synthesis and application
The program’s core classes revolve around three major themes: critical systematic inquiry, professional and personal development, and management of information and resources in a rapidly changing healthcare environment. In these courses, you develop a stronger understanding of the policies, ethics and theoretical foundation of the nursing practice while also diving into more technical aspects like nursing research, health care informatics and epidemiological methodologies. In your family nurse practitioner-specific classes, you explore how to provide quality health services to individuals and families from all backgrounds, including pediatric and adolescent, women’s health, and adult and geriatric care. You also participate in numerous clinical practicums to sharpen your clinical competencies, including providing preventive care, patient diagnosis and treatment, and health maintenance and management of chronic illness to individuals across the lifespan.

Experienced registered nurses with an MSN from a regionally-accredited college or university and CCNE or ACEN (formerly NLNAC) accreditation are eligible to apply for the post-master’s certificate program. The PMHNP post-master’s certificate program requires 18 to 27 semester hours.

No. The master’s of science in nursing degree is from Xavier University and is awarded on meeting coursework standards that are independent of course delivery mode. Participants will earn an MSN degree.
Participation expectations vary by professor. Courses are asynchronous with no set meeting times; however, practicum and scholarly project courses may include an online synchronous session (at the discretion of the instructor) at the end of the semester for student sharing/collaboration purposes. The nursing administration and faculty in this program understand the importance of flexibility for working professionals.
None of the MSN programs or post-master’s certificate programs here (Education, FNP, Forensics) offer nursing licensure in any state, but it is a prerequisite for admission to these programs.
Admission requirements for applicants include:
- Registered Nurse: Applicants must be a registered nurse with an unencumbered United States RN license in the state where practicum experiences will be completed.
- Experience: A minimum of 1 year of nursing experience is required. Two years of experience is preferred.
- Education: Applicants must hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited college or university. The College of Nursing will verify program accreditation. Transfer credits are accepted only from regionally accredited institutions.
- Statistics Course: An undergraduate statistics course with a grade of "C" or better is required.
- Non-BSN Applicants: Applicants who do not hold a BSN are not eligible for online MSN programs. Please consider the MSN Direct Entry (MIDAS) program as an alternative pathway to a Master of Science in Nursing degree.
The online PMHNP MSN program is a 2-3 year program. It is possible to attend part time.
